The Frank Zappa Statue In Vilnius

20100401_003

Hidden away in a parking lot just off Pylmio Gatve, there's a statue of Frank Zappa. It's not fully clear exactly why Frank Zappa was honoured in this way, but according to the Rough Guide it probably has something to do with breaking with years of forced Soviet art. If that's the case, it is a nice celebration of transformation.

Strange Design I Don't Understand

20100218_002

Yesterday I flew from Kastrup airport, close to Copenhagen, to Paris. It was not the first time I took that flight, but this time I flew a different company than I usually do. Normally i fly Air France, this time it was SAS. Changing companies of course does something to your loyalty programme, but often it also means that you are traveling in a different type of plane. I like the Airbuses used by AF, or the the Boeings of Air Baltic, but yesterday I was transported in a McDonnell Douglas MD 81 (or 82). I've seen them often on Kastrup, but never realized a big design flaw they have. A design decision, I fail to understand. As an illustration, I took a picture of the view I had from my window, while seated towards the back of the plane, purposely not over the wings. And because the picture might be not very clear: yes, that is one of the engines. And yes, the sound was horrible.

A Slow Start

Alright, I am not in Riga yet, but I will be soon. So, I registered myself for the half marathon distance of the Riga marathon event (http://www.nordearigasmaratons.lv/en/). After some serious procrastination, I finally started running again today. I thought that after almost 4 months of not running, I would be able to crunch out at least 4K. But, just as regular running pays off in terms of endurance, regular not-running also does inversely. After about 2.6K my legs blew up. So the run was a slow start (http://ow.ly/12FNJ).

Anyway, doesn't matter, just a bit of a longer way to go to get into half marathon distance shape. At least I'm running again, and that feels good.

Hotel Fox: 21 Artist Designed Nights To Remember

I have been in Copenhagen quite a few times recently, for work. I tried a few hotels, but ended up having hotel Fox (http://www.hotelfox.dk/) as my favourite. The staff is super friendly, trendy and efficient. But the most eyecatching feature of the hotel is the room design. 21 artists redesigned the rooms, which makes every stay a new experience. Maybe, just maybe, the rooms feel not as what you might expect from a business travel overnight stay, but they are clean and always unique. I have been given several different rooms the last time, of which the fetility altar room might have been the weirdest. But... I haven't seen everyhing yet. So, next time I'm in Copenhagen, I will definitely stay here again. Curious what room I will have then

Working From Home Today

20100126_003

Whilst the team of Interdean is packing up our goods, I'm trying to get some work done at home. My desk is our coffee table, already packed for shipment, and my seat... well, yes, that's the floor.

Snow In Riga part 2

Apparently, also in Riga it is exceptionally cold. It hasn't been this cold in 50 years. And even though the cold is not always our best friend, the snow makes for some beautiful scenery in the 'green belt'.

Beautiful Riga In The Snow

Yesterday it was already dark in Riga when I arrived. The amount of snow, and the low temperature were impressive. But this morning, with the sun out in full swing, the street of our hotel (and hopefully our appartment as well a bit later) looks amazing.
